What to Look for on Your Roof After Hurricane?

Hurricanes are a part of life in Texas. On average, one to two hurricanes hit Texas and Louisiana each year between June and November, and 40% of those storms affect Texas. One of the most vulnerable parts of your home during a hurricane is your roof. After the storm passes, it’s important to assess the damage so that future winds and even gentle rains don’t make any storm-related roof problems worse.

Properly Inspecting Your Roof After a Hurricane

After a severe weather event, you’ll want to clear any debris off your roof as soon as possible. Leaving limbs or branches on your roof’s surface can detach shingles or trap moisture. Next, you’ll want to give your roof a good visual inspection. It’s best to inspect your roof using a ladder and non-skid work boots that will allow you to carefully navigate your roof while maintaining a secure footing. Be cautious of any slick areas or any patches that feel saggy. You’ll also want to take a look at your roof from underneath by checking out the interior of your attic for leaks.

Warning Signs That Your Roof May Need Repair
Some of the things you’ll want to look for when you inspect your roof include:
  1. Lifted nails – High winds can pop up the nails on your roof, leaving the shingles vulnerable to the next storm or burst of high wind. You may also see nails on the ground surrounding the roof.
  2. Wet spots in the attic – Another sign that your roof needs some attention is wet spots at the top of your home. Keep in mind that water can travel along beam and joists, so your leak may not be directly above the wet spot.
  3. Cracks in your shingles – Flying debris and high winds can crack your asphalt shingles, allowing water to penetrate the surface.
  4. Problems with your roof drainage system – Other places you want to check are your gutters and drainpipes. If these are missing or disconnected, you’ll need to call a roofing contractor to have them reinstalled so that rainwater continues to be diverted away from your foundation.
